Artist Q&A:

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in music, and can you share a pivotal moment that shaped your artistic identity?

  • Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by music. When my dad wasn’t home, I’d switch the TV to MTV Base or any music channel I could find—I just couldn’t get enough. Singing came naturally to me, and I joined the church choir early on. But it wasn’t until after high school that I realized this wasn’t just a hobby. I kept creating, and the feedback I got from people in my neighbourhood was different—real. They told me my sound was unique and that it connected with them. That was the moment I knew this was more than a pastime. It was my path.

2. How have your background and personal experiences influenced your sound and the themes in your music?

ree
  • I’m from Lagos, Nigeria—Ipaja Baruwa to be specific. I was raised in a peaceful and loving home by both of my parents. That environment taught me about emotional balance, love, and patience—things that naturally found their way into my music. I sing about what I see, what I feel, and the journey of life. Love is a recurring theme, because it's something I experienced deeply growing up.Afrobeat is the heart of my sound. I infuse my native Yoruba language into my lyrics whenever I can—it’s important to me that people feel my roots in the rhythm and the message.

3. What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have they shaped your music and performance style?

  • The biggest hurdle was definitely the financial side of things. In the early days, I had to save for weeks just to afford studio time. I was juggling a 9-5 while studying at university, and there were times I had to skip meals just to make it all work. No manager, no sponsor—just me. Even getting my songs played or landing performance slots meant paying out of pocket or bribing DJs. It was rough, and I considered quitting more than once. But I kept going. A turning point came in 2021/2022 when I travelled to Ghana to connect with UK-based artists NSG, who were in Accra at the time. I watched how they worked, performed, and crafted music. That experience elevated my entire approach—how I write, how I record, how I perform. Shortly after, I released “COLD OUTSIDE” in 2022, produced by MOJO from NSG. That song marked a new chapter for me. I had grown. I had found my sound. And for the first time, I saw myself not just as a songwriter—but a full-fledged performer. Those struggles? They were necessary. They built me.

4. Who are your biggest influences, and how have they impacted your music today?

  • Fela taught me the power of using your voice and being proud of your roots. Wizkid showed me that Afrobeat can go global without losing authenticity. On the R&B side, Chris Brown and Omarion influenced my vocal style and stage presence. Stormzy brought the raw energy and lyrical truth I strive to embody. What all these artists have in common—and what I’ve learned from them—is the power of passion and honesty. I don’t make music just to make noise. I want people to feel something real when they hear me or watch me perform.

5. What can fans expect from your upcoming performance with AFRO.VERVE?

  • Expect an unforgettable night. I’m bringing everything I’ve got—energy, passion, and connection. I’ll be performing some of my most-loved tracks, along with an exclusive unreleased song. More than just a setlist, this is going to be an experience. I want people to feel the journey I’ve been on and to vibe with me in real time. The crowd’s energy is part of the performance, and I promise we’re going to feed off each other. It’s going to be electric.
